Exhaust gas analyzer circuitry?

I have a need of a device to measure carbon monoxide content of car exhaust. Anyone have suggestions for a homemade device? A resolution of

1 to 1/2 percent would be fine. No need for parts per million accuracy.

The circuit is called a "potentiostatic" circuit.

Auto gas analysis usually uses large rugged sensors which are more resilient to temperature and cross-interference from other gases than the small types used in e.g. portable instruments. Gas sensors always have problems with cross-sensitivity, even to humidity sometimes. That's why they have so many membranes and filters inside.

Carbon monoxide has a single strong infra-red absorbtion line at 2143 cm^-1, (4666 nm) corresponding to the C-O stretch, but it might be difficult to exploit this in a home-made device.
