Earth Ground Signals

A student sent me an email the other day. He wondered what kind of low frequency signals would be picked up if he stuck two copper rods in the ground and connected them to a sensitive differential amplifier. It is an interesting question. Sure, you would expect a lot of signals associated with the 60Hz AC line frequency and maybe some odd order harmonics of 60Hz but would there be anything else? I know that some bedrock containing quartz can induce sizable earth ground currents during small earthquakes. Such a circuit might detect those kind of signals and perhaps distant lightning strikes as well. Also, suppose you injected a low frequency signal, such as 40KHz, into the ground and used that signal to monitor changes in the resistance between two probes in the ground. Could you detect footsteps or vehicular traffic between the probes, as the ground was compressed? Has anyone ever tried this? It could make for an interesting science fair project.

One can communicate some miles, 10 or 20 I think, using ground "antennas" at audio frequency. It's a sheet resistance effect and signal levels drop off rapidly with distance. Popular Electronics magazine did some stuff on this a long time ago.

Besides power, earthquake, lightning signals, there is supposedly a tidal signal produced by tidal flexure of the crust.

You certainly should be able to get the "shuman frequency" on about ~7.83 Hz...

You would get 50Hz as well, carried over from Europe as signals travel quite well in the Earth crust. Or at least that's what I think would happen.

In the early 50's I had a (very) long-wire antenna from which I enjoyed listening to whistlers. I had no idea what they were at the time, so I just let my imagination wander.......

IIRC there should be a shallow notch in the background noise at about 7Hz and a widish peak at the 7.83 number. Lightning at large distances is turned into "whistlers".

A lightning storm nearby came out as KABLAM in the head phones. I added a limiter after that.

I worked for Schlumberger 25 years ago. We performed electric logs of oil wells. We always measured the potential between an electrode "down hole" and the surface (along with the other more sophisticated measurements). As the logging tools were pulled up from the bottom, the potential would change based on the type of rock and content (oil, salt water, fresh water, gas).

I had a huge dipole when I was young. At night I woke up and was wondering why the ceiling lit up blue once in a while. Got up and found that the coax connector lying on the table was arcing even though there was no thunder storm.
