dis-assembling a transformer

Hi all, I'd like to do some experimenting with flyback converter transformer design, and I have a bunch of surplus transformers of the type used in computer switching power supplies. The problem is, they've got all those windings on them, and the core is somehow attached to the bobbin. Is there an expedient way to disassemble these things? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I'd like to salvage the bobbin if at all possible, so I think the chop saw may be ruled out. :) Are the two sections of the "E" core glued together somehow at the junction of the outer legs of the "E"? If that's the case maybe I can use a Dremel to cut through the two legs. I don't know, though, I know ferrite is a pretty hard material.

Is there anywhere online I can buy _new_ E cores and bobbins in onesies and twosies?

It got defeated, so nothing will change on that front. Not that it makes any difference; the kids that are smoking pot illegally will still continue to smoke pot illegally. ;-)

Some are two "C" shapes held together by a sturdy metal clip which might be removable with care. Some use a type of wax which might be melted or removed with a solvent. A hacksaw or coping saw can be used on the windings and that clip. What do you want to keep?

Too bad, you'd think the state would welcome going from spending an obscene amount of money to making an obscene amount. Guess there's still a few prudes in California after all.

Agreed on the former point, but I think the latter is open to question (even though it was one of the more visible claims by the proposition's backers). "Making an obscene amount" would assume that the price of marijuana would remain at roughly its current level (thus leading to large revenues from taxation).

However, I think it quite likely that the current price is well above what would end up being the case after the repeal of prohibition. The free market would see to that... if almost anyone could raise a crop in their back-yard without fear of being imprisoned, there would be a big shift in the supply-and-demand equation, and prices would come down.

Nevertheless, eliminating the need for the considerable amount of money required to arrest (or cite), prosecute, and jail marijuana users would certainly have a beneficial impact on California's financial stresses and strains.

Unfortunately, the recent study of the social-impact-and-harm of various drugs (legal and illegal) didn't come out in time to be discussed significantly during the current campaign. It's no surprise to see a solid analysis which shows that alcohol is causing far more social harm than marijuana does (or, IMO, would even if marijuana were legalized), but a lot of people really don't want to admit the possibility of this or address the hypocracy in the current legal situation.

Do a search on "Amadon Associates". They've gone through some name changes, but they used to sell that stuff. As an advantage, you'll get a core with a known material, and engineering data.

I'm sure some of the drugcartels put money in the pockets of some of the prudes to make sure drugs stayed illegal to keep the profits high

AIUI, the growers' assn was a major opponent. A pal has a (CA legal) clinic/dispensary as a client--he says they're raking in $20k a day.

The kids in my high school who drank were always in trouble. Some graduated, but with poor grades. Others were expelled for various reasons. I had to pull one of them off one of the women teachers, when he wouldn't take NO for an answer.

My dad smoke a pipe for years.
