Just a thought: could you use the PoE trick, running a signal as common-mode through the transformer's stray capacitances?
The prospect of (for instance) trapping a carrier frequency (and reading data off the filter resonant inductor) with high currents and rectifier switching transients in the mix, is kinda... annoying. Also, hard to make bidirectional.

detection circuit on the primary side to the target frequency on the secon dary side (load side). That's done, since it would need to detect maybe sma ll current changes
al (to inject a current into the secondary side winding), and detecting tha t signal on the primary side. But, that is really not cheap anyway, at leas t I have not found a super easy way to do that yet

This is a very interesting idea. All communication systems use a mixer to multiply a high frequency carrier with the actual data signal. So, if the modulated signal is applied to the primary(e.g.) of a high frequency transformer, then the stepped up/down version of the primary input will appear at the secondary winding terminals. This signal can d-modulated to recover the data.

The situation in transmission of AC power is more complex, though: there's usually a rectifier at some point, and that generates LOTS of harmonics that overlap the communication bandpass. Historically, AC powerline data transmission has used time-gated bursts (at zero crossings), with lots of redundancy.

For downstream Manchester coding could be an option. Just rectify the signal after the transformer to extract the power.
