Naw - if you did it on purpose in those days, there had to be a selenium rectifier in the mix. (At least, I think you could still get them in 1980)

That certainly would smell up the place. However this was TRIAC's.
I used to make photocells from Selenium rectifier plates when I was a kid... easy to get when your dad owns a TV repair shop ;-)
