Since diagonally opposite sections are NPN and PNP, how will that work?

If you look at the thumbnail of the MAT-14 on Google Images it looks like the bottom transistors are PNP, but then if you blow it up you see they're NPNs. That confused me too!

Not in the MAT14, they aren't--it's a supermatch NPN quad.

Okay. The trivial way would be two opamps, two resistors and one diode. Obviously this needs gain thermo compensation in the first stage. At least the zero is stable :-) A Taylor series or a minimax approximation using a cascade of analog multipliers could be done. Time or frequency or PWM game could be played with the exponential impulse response of RC.
