What are folks using for a 2N3904-ish transistor?



Criteria:


  • Cheap
  • Available (lots of sources is _good_)
  • SOT-23
  • HFE > 100 at 20mA
  • Vce >= 30

Our jellybean NPN is BCX70J. Nice, beta-graded general-purpose thing. The PNP is BCX71.

But I prefer mosfets, like 2N7002 or FDV301, for simple switching apps.

Although perhaps one can get that back in fewer biasing resistors...

We're paying, on average

BCX70 0.053

BCX71 0.018

2N7002 0.021

FDV301 0.045

Those numbers are the average of the parts currently in stock, so the prices may be a little noisy.

But yes, our parts placement/inspection cost is way, way more than numbers like these, so eliminating base resistors is well worthwhile. In our business, parts like these are essentially free.

A good FPGA can cost $150 or more. An 8-layer PCB can cost $80, or a lot more for quick turn.

Thanks John, that's handy to have as a reference. I guess there's enough variability within transistors that I really can't say that FET average a bit more, pricewise -- at least for jellybean parts.

The 2N7002 is really crummy unless you're above 5V. I've moved to the Diodes DMG1012T. It's cheap and small (SOT523).

Several times as much. Even the DMG1012T is about 4x what a MMBT3904 costs. The 2N7002 costs as much as the DMG1012T. Did I say that it sucks at low voltages? ;-)

Resistors are $.002. If you don't like adding resistors, use a pre-biased BJT, though they're still more expensive than a BJT + resistors.

I don't have our prices handy but we're paying something like $.05 for a

2N7002 and $.013 for a MMBT3904. Resistors are between $.001 and $.003 and there is no penalty for discretes.

Our manufacturing cost per part placed is so close to zero it's not measured. If you're worried about base resistors the pre-biased BJTs are a good alternative, too.

What's a "good" GPGA? ;-)

Rohm have a version that's pretty nice. 2.5V drive and still good for

60V. Low input capacitance. And cheap.

One of the Altera parts with PCI Express and a bunch of serdes channels.

FDV301 is a nice logic-level fet, about a nickel in modest quantities.

We were paying over $3K for Virtex-2s and 4s. "Good" can also be $10.

The DMG1012T is a nickel in single reel quantities. We'll do for or five reels of them a year.

RK7002 About 3 cents @ 1 reel.

Look at the DMG1012T. Lower threshold, lower capacitance, lower Rds(on) but about five cents.
