Hello. Can anyone advise please?
I need to read 8 outputs and control 8 inputs on an appliance remotely over the Internet. Can anyone recommend an off-the-shelf module with a fixed IP address that will allow me to do this? Preferably a UK supplier but will consider anywhere else.

Lantronix has several "serial to ethernet" products. I've played with the XPort some, to get an idea of its capabilities. They come in a couple of different flavours, with the XPort Direct being the newer member of the family.
They also provide eveluation kits
I haven't done more than evaluate them, myself, but IIRC one of the regs around here does employ the modules in production units.

Many have ethernet ports and can control/monitor multiple channels either based upon local logic or remote commands.
Lots of printer-server devices exist that put an 8-bit parallel port on an IP address; if you want the entire Internet to talk to such, though, you have to do some groundwork. Have you considered using a dynamic DNS service instead of fixed IP?
