career guidance

I have Masters degree in EE. I worked for a semi industry for 3 years and then switched to finance (software dev). I been in it for about past 1 year now.

Recently I was approached by an old co-worker to send resume in his company.(medical device manufacturer)

My question is how does my experience in financial domain for last one year affect my chances? Will it be a disadvantage?

I need advise on how to approach this opportunity so that I can put a positive spin on the experience that I had in a non-engineering field.

Thanks in advance

If you worked as a coder in a cubicle, churning out code applicable to one particular project, then it might not come across too well. Unless the manufacturer is looking for exactly that kind of work.

If you got to work with a wide range of people in finance - startups, big businesses, small businesses, vendors, governments, regulatory agencies, etc. - then it could have a very positive spin.

A large chunk of effort in medical engineering can have to do with regulation and approval for the device.

Hey I'm a college dropout who took two years off on my dime to lie around and get drunk and I still find work. Don't sweat it. If you don't get hired, it's not because of your year of software. It's just an excuse they'll use, they wouldn't have hired you anyway.

Why not ask the old co-worker?

Not really, it's only a year.

Say there was lots of formal paperwork and procedures and that you got really excited doing lots of formal stuff - a must-have requirement for a medical device company.
