What, no mechanic?

Thanks, Frank. (remove \'q\' and \'.invalid\' when replying by email)

Maybe need to invent a new (controlled) word, analogous to "realtor". "Enginator" or something like that (that particular word is taken by Dresser).

Not really necessary. The problem is that in order to look 'clever' businesses now call their repair techicians engineers instead.

A bit like salepersons now being called 'sales executives'. The influence of our daft service sector driven economy.

Graham

Would you care to put some context into that ?

Graham

The people who mind steam engines were the first engineers, followed by the guys who drive trains. We have "stationary engineers" who sit around in the basements of buildings and watch the HVAC systems. I suppose stationery engineers design greeting cards.

In UK, people have been struggling with this for over 40 years. The word 'Ingenieur' keeps being trotted out, but hardly anyone like it. Too French. (;-)

If you pay a due to FEANI, you can use 'Eur. Ing.' instead of 'Mr.' (or any genderific variant). This can result in you being sent mail addressed to 'Mr. E.U.R. Ing'.

I get mail intended for me and Eeyore, addressed to 'J M Woodgate and Ass'.(;-)

I've never heard a train driver referred to as an engineer in the UK. So it's those damn Americans we have to blame again for reducing the value of the term ?

Graham

And of course in Germany you could be Herr Doktor Ing !

I reckon we should have a whip round and get you a fluffy one !

Value of the term? Working electronics designers aren't "professional" as such, unless maybe they belong to some "professional society" or are licensed by the government. But plumbers can do both those things, too.

I'm a circuit designer, and my legal status is no different from the guys who work in our neighboring buildings, carpet sales and windshield repair, respectively. All of us derive our status from the quality of the work we do.

I think the UK is still a lot more class and status-oriented than the US is, which is a partial explanation of why we grow relatively few native terrorists. If Karl Marx had lived in Chicago instead of London, I think he would have written a very different book.

Oops, gotta go stir the split-pea soup.

ESAD Eeyore ;-)

Hi John,

Speaking of cooking... "N" attempted frying Plantains a few days ago... didn't quite meet expectations ;-)

Got any recipes?

BTW: Had a nice crawfish etouffee the other day at Rockfish ... burp ;-)

Well, use bananas instead. Plantains can be tough and bitter.

Bananas fried in butter are wonderful for breakfast, with a little brown sugar and cinnamon. Chop up bananas into pancakes and waffles, too, with walnuts or pecans. And I think I posted my Bananas Foster recipe here, but I could do it again.

Properly made crawfish etoufee is the best tasting thing on the planet. My first wife was a cajun, and her version was magnificent (so were her ****, but that's another story.) Good crawfish fat makes the sauce.

John

We were trying to duplicate the almost-potato-chip quality that we had at a local restaurant... with a cheese plate, but plantain "chips" instead of crackers... quite nice!

"N" does a very nice Bananas Foster.

Let's hear that story ;-)

Whip round = an informal spontaneous collection ( of money ) for a fluffy Eeyore ( cuddly toy ).

I am still in posession of a National databook set (Volumes 1-3) from

1982, where they describe the LH0033/LH0063C 'Fast buffer / Damn fast buffer' and in the applications section it states 'ACHTUNG' before describing the rules for high speed layout. Accurate, and just too funny AND non PC.

I love it.

Cheers

Couldn't even find one, huh?

The fallacy of appealing to lack of proof of the negative is a type of logical fallacy of the following form:

"This exists because there is no proof that it does not exist." Non-fallacious ways to prove something include the use of logical syllogisms and/or the incorporation of empirical observations. But it is not logical to argue that something exists simply because there is no proof to the contrary; one cannot say, "No one has proven that aliens do not exist. Therefore, based on that alone, they must exist, notwithstanding that I have no evidence that they do exist". Given (as it is above) that it was not proven that aliens do not exist, they might exist, but this alone does not prove them to exist.

Another common example is that, "A supernatural force must exist because there is no proof that it does not exist". However, the converse is also true, according to the argument from ignorance: One also cannot say that, "I have not seen proof that something supernatural exists, therefore a supernatural force cannot exist". Also, similar to the aliens in the above example, since no proof is available that this does not exist, it might exist, but this alone does not prove it to exist.
