They don't corrode easily, are fairly scarce, and look pretty. ;)

Copper corrodes fairly easily - in several ways.
A couple of other things come to mind. These metals are relatively easy to purify and are soft enough to easily mint. OTOH, aluminum was doesn't "corrode" easily (its oxide isn't oxygen permeable), it was scarce, and looks OK. It does feel sorta "cheap", though. ;-)
