Larkin's point reminds me of the _easy_ way to explain how to get Butterworth... Design for max flat low-pass, which forces L and C values based on the bandwidth and the source impedance, then "tune" for the desired center frequency.

Sorry? Where did I claim that even once, let alone habitually?

Butterworth, Bessel, and so on are specific examples requiring specific pole placements. That has nothing to do with what we were arguing about, except that they're both examples of one-hump responses from a

4-pole ladder BPF.

I generally look up a lowpass prototype in Williams, do the resonance thing if it's a bandpass, then normalize to the actual cutoff frequency. Lately, we have been using the remarkable Nuhertz software, which does a huge range of LC filter designs using finite-Q, standard-value parts.

I'm sure that Jim always designs LC filters from scratch, and does all his multiplication and long division by hand.

When the two-peak thing came up, you started confusing the pole positions with the peak positions, and made the rather ridiculous claim that a one-peak response was "physically impossible".

Now you're just trying to muddy the water and sniping from the sidelines, apparently because you can't stand the loss of face. You got something wrong. Just like we all do, often. No biggie.

Get over it.

As the original schematic was posted. Add a source impedance and a load impedance, d'Q-ing, then you can make a smooth top. I vaguely recall some theorem saying you can't have COINCIDENT poles in a PASSIVE network. I think they can be on the same circle, but I haven't been able to verify that yet either.

'Twasn't secret, but it was a while ago. If I can't find it, I'll dream up a network that 3f will do a .pz analysis on, and let you have it. LTspice netlists need quite a bit of massage to run in Berkeley 3f, which doesn't support .param, and other things.

LTspice just barfs at a .pz statement.
