Look, dead baby jokes are not my preferred form of humor, so I just don't read them. This subthread started because someone tried to impose his "aesthetics" upon everyone else (or at least upon John Larkin and his customers) as obviously the right way to do things. Seems like you are doing the same with your sense of humor (or lack thereof).

You can correctly tell us "I don't find that funny" but when you try to tell us "that is not funny" you are well down the slippery slope to Net Nazihood.

The old saw is "one man's meat is another man's poison", whether it is use of Flash (is trash) in websites, or humor that some people find offensive.

So, what's your excuse? (For a terminal lapse in good manners?)

Yes. But there's malice and malice. At the end of their statements, they mention three disclaimers. Violate those and all the foregoing disclosure restrictions are meaningless.

They can search and disclose any info if:

• The law requires them to disclose (fair enough),
• To protect their rights,
• To protect the safety of any person.

Their rights, by the way, includes the rights to protect patents, bogus or otherwise, that might be violated by any software you run. And the rights to protect any multimedia to which they have, or acquire, the rights. Etc...

The "safety of any person" is like the anti-terrorism laws. They could invoke it against almost anyone with no recourse or presumption of innocence. The bloke next door could accuse you of being a kiddy fiddler, and that gives them the right to trawl through all their accumulated records and to disclose them.

Not for a moment implying that they would act unlawfully, or that anyone else should. But there are significant gray areas...

Yes. anything@high...com goes to Rebecca, so she gets a hundred a day or so, many of them really gross. But it seems to me that spam has really dropped a lot in the last year or so, maybe because that guy is in jail. I'm getting a dozen or so, maybe, and Thunderbird filters most of them to the trash bin. My ISP is filtering for me a lot, too.

As stated elsewhere in the thread, modern optical-disk-burning software does warn you. You can do an auto-truncate for all or edit the destination filenames one-by-one.

The option I would like to see is to be able to edit the SOURCE filename (then have the software use THAT as the destination name)

Yeah. That would be nice. Of course, if Larkin had deleted his temp files before backing up, (a logical step IMO), this wouldn't be an issue. . .

The limit on Windoze filenames is 128 characters. OTOH, Unix allows 255-character filenames

If you know that this needs to be your limitation, the OS should have a setting that limits filename length or that truncates long filenames upon creation or (as Win said) otherwise flags them for editing.

Yes, but that rarely sticks in front of a jury. They have created themselves an exposure. All it takes it an accidental leak or an act of a disgruntled employee.

TI yes except for the "knowledge base", Philips no IMHO.

Probably you don't find it so annoying because you guys are in Europe. The amount of info Philips offer through their web site is truly amazing. However, the latency times when loading extra non-sensical stuff can be much longer if you are an ocean away. Most times when I click through the Philips web site it trundles "... waiting for stockquotes ...". What a pain. So, usually I just move on to their competitors over here in the US.

Absolutely. Ain't nothing like a good old checkered red/black lumberjack shirt. I probably have five and went stylish by allowing green/black and blue/black into the mix. Costco had those last winter, for about $13 a pop. In summer it's all Hawaiian or T-shirts. I guess Ban would have a fit if he saw all that.

I do have to commend Italian design though. I would never trade any of our Artemide Tizio lamps for anything. Especially when checking very detailed CAD print-outs they are indispensable. Molto bene.

Sheesh. Delete the cached files the easy way.... Tools > Internet Options > Delete Files

Clean all that junk (including the web cache) before doing any disk backup. No practical use saving all that garbage.

OTOH, the operating system clearly supports long filenames. Sonic should be suspect for not fully supporting the operating system it claims to run under. Dunno how that is Bill's fault?
