Yes, and since those parameters were decided upon (decades ago), there have been created single chip audio solutions that exceed it by far, so it should be very easy to do in nearly any case these days with a very low parts count.

Yes, there certainly have been, starting with the Fairchild UA706 (RIP, sucker would catch fire and blow a hole clean through FR-4 board if you spoke to it harshly) to the TBA810 (RIP, also a rather goosey chip but died silently) through the National LM38x series (RIP, current hogs, feedback resistors in the low ohms sucked current like there was an infinite supply at the other end).
Other than the one survivor of the multitude (LM386, half a watt isn't much power) tell me one current production audio device, single supply, 2-4 watts from a 13.6 volt supply, single ended (one side of load grounded), won't die with 30 volt starter motor transients, that you think will be around for the next ten years.
Oh, for the simplicity of a 6V6!!! Or a 50C5!!!!

the 73kHz was allocated to amateurs for a few years in England. There are still LowFER allocations at 160kHz. Check out QRSS, which uses waterfall displays to pick out ultra-slow Morse code broadcast at extremely low power (due to the LowFER restrictions plus the inevitably inefficient antennas).

There is not much of money in the audiophile stuff, however the consumer audio is a big market with "many-many-cheapo-cheapo" philosophy.

At one time I used a bunch of TL084s, because the company where I was working had just bought out another company's whole stock room for cents on the dollar, and they had a whole bin full of them, that we could just help ourselves to. I must have scarfed 100 LEDs and about 500x 0.1 monolythics.
On another note, I was wondering, "What the hell is 'floobydust'?" so I JFGI, and Lo and Behold!
