Bench Power Supply

I need a small lightweight variable power supply 0-15 volts would do.

I want to modify a laptop power module switcher to vary the output voltage and maybe the current.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Thanks,

NM

Well, I have designed a few linear bench power supplies, and I know how to buy linear bench power supplies but I have never seen a design for a switching bench power supply. Seems like it would be a challenging project to pursue especially if there is a way to simply modify a laptop power supply switcher to produce a variable voltage without a linear stage that would just burn up excess power. A tiny efficient variable voltage source. Do you know of any?

There is a article in November/December 2004 issue of QEX that describes how to modify an ATX switching power supply to serve as a supply for a transmitter. Not quite what you are looking for but may give you some ideas.

Sure. Go to your local college, and see if they have a curriculum for "Switching Power Supply Design". Pass the course, and do what needs to be done to the power supply, since you'll then know how.

Or, go to the local Fry's or equivalent, and buy a bench supply for $50 - $100.

Good Luck! Rich

** Just go buy a mini SMPS like this:

100 - 240 volts AC input.

3, 5, 6, 9, 12 & 13.8 volts at 2.5 amps

Even got a pair of red and black banana terminals.
