In my day, the windshield wiper motor was the nastiest device in the car. You'd think, after nearly 50 years, they'd have solved that :-) ...Jim Thompson

Yikes? You don't recall that I have a hardware firewall?

And it never crashes like yours ;-)

I'm not fond of browser-based access, plus I can run a PSpice and/or an LTspice simulation remotely, just as if I were here; do E-mail with my venerable Eudora without any synchronization pain, likewise my calendar and Agent.

That's what I was after when I posted that query the end of May. Lots of free stuff, and lots of pain, so I opted (on Aaron's advice) for GoToMyPC ($9.95/mo)... works like a champ, plus has several layers of security. ...Jim Thompson

If I don't run Acrobat Reader or Orcad mine doesn't crash either, and it's also firewalled. I meant the wasted energy. But on your power bill that's probably just a blip.

I access my email and Usenet via an email client, not via a browser. Ok, I can't run fast sims but I've never had the need while on the road. Then again I rarely become involved in IC design although right now I am.

Sync'ing email is no problem, I've set up a layered "trickle" scheme of email accounts so I have the same emails at home as on the laptop.

I found SVN and VPN to work nicely. "Higher end" commercial stuff from big 'puter corporations was mostly disappointing. Just like with CAD, lower cost -> better CAD. Ok, with CAD the free open source ones don't cut it for me.

They added more nasty stuff: powered sliding doors, sunroofs, etc. Anything that toggles direction when it hits a limit switch creates very ugly spikes.

And don't forget the stereos.

When I bought my car the dealer forgot (!) to mention in the rather long haggling session that it has a six-speaker system. So on the way home i turned it on .. tchk .. tchk .. *BOOM* ... woohoo!

When at a traffic light and the bass really loud (I just had to try that ...) I noticed that the engine rpm dipped noticeably and the ECU corrected by "stepping on it". There's no data in the handbook but this stereo must have lotsa watts.

Unfortunately it is not that simple. Problem is your ground return wire is bouncing on the same spike, too. Which means the spike gets applied to your inputs. It may not have sufficient energy to damage, but it is sure enough to disrupt the operation.

Lighter outlet always has a fuse of 10..15A, and it is designed to survive electric short.

50 years ago, many cars had VACUUM wipers. THAT was truly 'nasty'. I had them in my 70 AMC Gremlin. speed up,and the wipers slow or stop. lift the throttle, and the wipers went like crazy.

Even my Gremlin had that problem "fixed". It had a *#&$in' vacuum wiper motor. It was variable speed, too. The wiper motor speed was inversely proportional to the acceleration, offset so zero was max acceleration. :-(

It appears that they didn't do design reviews in those days. And then people wonder why Detroit needed to be bailed out ...

Design reviews? I would have been happy if they put the right number of parts on the damned things.

Oh boy. Now Jonas Fields picks on me, probably because I learn frmo J. Larkins postings, but not from J. Fields.

I do not learn much from Joers postings, and he used similar arguments to PHUT randomly as a sort of sales pitch for how good he is. He even suggested adding a resistor in the base of my Miller transistor varicap against 'oscillation', not even understanding the circuit. I just answered 'yes sure', to stop the conversation. You just argue and argue with J.L for only the reason of arguing I guess. Your ASCII art and logic solutions are from the seventies. That you have a vision problem and need braille diagrams comes on top of that. Now go and wire up an other counter and 555,

Your have the mental age of a 4 year old in a playground, just like the rest of your party members. Your patents are old hat, your diagrams common knowledge for anybody who has been around, you do not even know how to fix the simplest home appliances, no wonder you are impressed by Joers and his dog filled Ford T, but you got some attention again now, not that that will ever make you really happy, but you do not have the brains to understand that either. You should oil your me[1][tal hip, as a there comes a squeaking sound from your postings.

Sure, I think the worst scenario is like this: The nearby H nuke goes of, the EMP hits the car, the mechanic tries to kick start it with 480 V AC 3 phase , the car is accelerated past the speed limit, the chassis shot full of holes by the FBI, the neighbours hold a barbecue under the engine block, shooting up through the van Allen belt the cars radio antenna generates a huge EMF because of the earth magnetic field, it gets out into space, is entered by an alian who uses the cigarette lighter to charge his fasor, and in a case like that you better add an extra zener.
