anybody know of an available composite video OSD chip

Question

Hi folks,I've looked hi and low (I've worn out my keyboard's G, O, L, E keys)and can't seem to find anybody who still manufacturers an On ScreenDisplay chip that works with composite video. NEC claims to make acouple (uPD6464A and uPD6465) but where the heck can one get smallquanities?I'm not really interested in a solution that is also a microcontrollerwith built-in OSD. Those tend to be pretty expensive (and also hard toget samples of) or masked parts (which means you need to buy a wholelot of them). And I've seen some pretty slick OSD implementations doneusing PICs and AVRs to do the genlock and video generation, but I'mnot sure I'll be able to clean that up enough to meet NTSC standards.I'm just trying to design a simple board that will plug between acomposite video color camera and a monitor or VCR and display someinformation on the screen. Volume might be a few hundred to a thousanda year. I'd really like to use a chip currently in production, notsomething like the STV5730.Thanks for your help,Mark Hahn

Look into Averlogic. I've had great trouble getting one of their chips(AL250) to work but in theory, they would have what you want.

It requires an external SRAM, but there are versions with internal RAM IIRC. You send and read data to it via i2c. Full genlock, RGB out, and composite out with BW characters. Yes, pretty hard to find these days eh ?

I'm currently using the uPD6467 in a few projects. It's a strange thing to program, and the quality is the same as a VCR from the eighties - but it does the job if you don't expect too much of it.

We order from Sascoholz in the Netherlands, they sell small quantaties as well.

Hey Ico, thanks for the pointer to Sascoholz. They have at least heard of the uPD6465 (but I have to beg and plead to get a price quote, sigh).

The uPD6467 looks like its intended for RGB video. Are you using it in a composite video application? The data sheets talks about VC1 and VC2 outputs but I haven't read enough to know if that will work for what I want. Are there any app notes for it that you know of? I couldn't find anything on the NEC site.
