The microZed compute platform plugs into the middle. The application board has eight DAC channels with filters and amps, two ADC inputs, power supplies, BIST, stuff like that. We put some parts under the Zedboard, simple stuff that shouldn't need a lot of probing or anything.



The only problem with MicroZed is that it uses a Xilinx FPGA, which requires the Vivado software, which really sucks.

Zynq and Vivado is big and complicated so of course it has a steep learning curve but sucks that's a strong word

No, but I have two guys working on this project, both pro FPGA jocks.

*They* think it sucks. The support sucks, too.

For an industrial product I would be severely worried about these things being available 10 years from now. Its even hard to find some old X FPGAs. Why not make your own 'Zed' board?

they'd have to be very old, as the processes get discontinued the price just increases so only those who really really need them will consider buying

Unless you make a lot it is hard to compete with the price, making your own board and plug that in instead is always an option later

You'd probably want to do it as plug-in anyway, you pretty much need to do

10 layers and blind vias to make the PCB

uZed is open source, Gerbers and all, so we could make them if we had to. Avnet is guaranteeing some years of availability. The FPGA itself is probably the biggest liability.

It it convenient to have all that stuff done. FPGA, ARMs, dram, flash, ethernet, USB, power supplies, boot loader, Linux.

We are doing a lot of serious waveform generation and filtering in the FPGA, clocked at 250 MHz. And the dual ARMs, running at 600 MHz, will be working hard too. Not PIC territory.
