Add XLR with 48 v PP to input Tascam 244 4-track that has only 1/4"

Hi all, I've recently purchased an Apex large diaphram condensor mic and have bee powering it with a cheap Art tube pre. I went ahead and tried to swap out the Art's TL702 opamps in favor of Burr Brown

2604s... now the thing won't work (naturally !) Not to worry... it was only $100. Thing is I don't necessairly want to replace it with another low quality pre or even a small mixer (you know the ones) to get phantom power and make the connection to my computer's 24 bit soundblaster card

(600 ohm line level). What I do have is an older Tascam 244 4-track recorder that would seem to have beter qualiy channel strips but does not support XLR or phantom

power. It has only unballanced 1/4" inputs. My Question is would it be feasable to construct and install at least one XLR input in the Tascam that will give me mic pwr and impedance matching to where ever it might patch in to the existing input? How might such a circuit lay out ? Oh and Phase reversal feature for the condensor mic might be handy. I can salvage parts from the dead Art pre.

Anyone care to make suggestions ?

It's not really practical - no.

I'm concerned thatyou would want to take on such a task if you managed to break a mic pre by simply changing op-amps too ! What did you think you would acheive by changing the TL072 ( I presume that's what you actually meant ).

It was a wild suggestion to get some kind of higher fidelity out of a cheap pre. Man is it cheap !... just opening the case caused it to stop working. I had to re solder all harness points but must be some traces not contacting. My intention had been to install a pair of IC sockets to facilitate swapping out opamps to find a better (more tube like) sound. Havent got the nut for a propper high end mic pre so I thought adapting something to the supposedly decent channel strip in the tascam might be the thing (20 years ago the 244 deck was state of the art at $1700 and might have better pre amp circuits EQ etc than anything ready made in my price range (cheap!)

I might go for some kind of inline power with XLR to TRS converter that has minimal sonic effect on the signal as opposed to a typical mic pre.

I see a few circuits floating around but haven't figured it out yet. I might seem green for sure... but I'm learning :)
