Because it's quite convenient to be able to roll down windows without having to pull over to the side of the road? And not to have to walk around to the other side of the car just to lock *all* the doors?

Years ago before power windows were common I'd see an awful lot of people barreling down the highway at 75Mph, learning over to raise or lower the front passenger window. Yikes!

I've been told that there was a measurable uptick in mini-van sales once mororized side doors became an option: For smaller women, just opening a large sliding side door like that took a rather annoying amount of effort, and having it motorized was a great improvement for them.

Nothinig wrong with your "manual" car, of course... but of course most of the economy today is about convenience and nothing having to do with "real" needs.

Yep. I wish I had gotten power windows on my pickup truck... reaching across to roll up/down the passenger side is a BIG hassle.

I only roll down the driver side window and walking around the car is actualy quite healthy. Most of us walk too little as it is, unless you have big dogs. Ours want their 2-3 miles/day.

Fast forward to today: Now people yap on their cell phones, fumble for that Grateful Dead CD, eat, put on nail polish, shave, brush their teeth (seriously, seen it!). It actually got worse.

There will be a sobering awakeing regarding the roughly 10% penalty for automatics once gas grossly exceed $5/gallon. When we walk our dogs we see lots of "convenient" cars for sale, with prices being slashed every otehr week and still no takes. Heck, I could pick up a Cadillac Seville in mint condition, with all the bells and whistles, for $3k. Or a Chevy Silverado with new engine for $3k from the same family. But I don't want to ...

Oh, it's a given that "convenience" and "healthy" are often at odds... McDonalds? 7-11? :-)

You probably think it quite odd that people would actually drive to a gym to jog around a track, right? :-)

I admit that one really doesn't make much sense, other than for the fact that it's somehow more comfortable to get hot and sweaty in an air-conditioned gym than it is in the 90 degree heat outside.

Pretty much all cars (even inexpensive little ones like Toyota Yarises... Yarii?... and Honda Fits) now have power doors and locks as an option.

Someone was telling me that the price of used Metros has skyrocketed right along with fuel prices.

I can proudly say that I haven't set foot into any of those in years. I did eat a double-double in Sunnyvale a few weeks ago though. Hotel, late arrival, all other places closed. But I compensated that with a glass of Porter.

That's what I particularly don't like among AGW folks. They are mostly health nuts which is a good thing. But instead of staying healthy by chopping firewood they go to ritzy gyms and at home they press that little thermostat button on the wall, blissfully unaware of what that does to the environment.

Well, in 1997 it took me a while to find a car without, a Mitsubishi Montero 4-cylinder.

Those are very wise words. Too often a new architecture is presented as the solution to everything. It all depends on what you want to do. FPGAs do get amazingly big though, for example the new Altera 40nm Stratix4.

I am a bit reluctant to recommend one experimenter board over the other, you can get expert opinion in comp.arch.fpga. I have done some crypto, video, frequency counter, that sort of stuff on my Xilinx board. The free Altera software seems a lot more mature then the Xilinx webpack though. Also check for availability of the chips, Xilinx can be unobtainium in small quantities, or very expensive, perhaps the situation is better in the US. There are others too, Actel for example.
