1mm pins -- through-hole or SMT?

The company I work for will not be going to SMT until 2008, believe it or not. In trying to track down a through-hole version of an SO- DIMM-200 connector, I found one at

called "CONN-DDR-SOD-200-STD" with the description "DDR SO DIMM, 200 pins, through hole". However, I requested the data sheet, which you can view here:

and it says that the pins are only 1mm long. Since most PCBs are at least 1.6mm, how does this work? Are these parts really intended for some kind of hybrid SMT/through-hole process whereby the short pins allow for reflow soldering? Can these parts be used in a pure through- hole process?



Sure looks like an SMT part to me.

Can SMT parts have vertical pins on the bottom?

I see two locating pins (non electrical) and solder tabs to hold it mechanically. The memory card is held parallel to, and a few mm above, the PCB.

I assumed from the diagram in the lower-left corner that the bottom

1mm -- consisting of the 200 pins (1mm height at 0.6mm spacing) and two pieces of plastic approx. 3 mm wide each on the ends -- would be below the top surface of the PCB, and everything else would be above it.

This part is a socket/carrier for a memory card, so of course the memory card itself would be held a few mm above the PCB -- namely at the dense array of contacts shown in the middle of that same diagram in the lower-left corner.

I'm not sure what the label "solder tab" means in the bottom middle diagram -- I'm guessing maybe it's an extra grounding point.

If my assumption is correct about the pins intruding into the top of the PCB a distance of 1mm, then I'm wondering if this part can be used in a 1.6mm-thick through-hole PCB.

No, unless you cut rectangular holes for those foot-like projections on the ears. The pins would just touch the pads, and your solder paste would make nice little trumpet-shaped fillets. :-)

There are two rows of 100 pins, not one row of 200 pins. Look at the A-A cross-section detail

...and PARALLEL to it.

..tt is not

It can be a meter thick if you like.

I don't know if such a thing is even available, but you might do better with the keyword "press-fit" instead of through-hole. That's common on high-density leaded sockets like that.

The answer from adexelec.com is that it was mislabeled as a through- hole part. It is really a surface mount part.
