Digital encoder output question

I will shortly be evaluating a new (rather expensive!) draw wire sensor with a digital output.



The output details start with Ua1, -Ua1, Ua2, -Ua2, Ua0, -Ua0 ( A, B, Index and A,B, Index inverted). OK, I understand that.



However, in addition to "+10..30Vdc supply" there is also a "+10..30Vdc sens" which isn't explained. Before I stuff any voltage into this, I'd like to know what it does. Also, there is a "-Uas" output which isn't referred to in the "data"sheet.



Please could someone explain these points before I light up 450 quid's worth of sensor?

Ask Penny & Giles, the makers. :) It's the least they can do, to answer, given the sensor cost, and the lack of data. Thet do say to ask for furtehr info if you want more digital info, so they're probably expecting people to call them.

Uas is probably a strobe, to cut off the signal if you need to, without having to add parts to do that.

My guess as to the sens wires is connect them to the supply wires, (There's a 0V sens wire too). But ask them, they clearly seem to expect it. Email costs close to nothing, and they list an address.

In the absence of further information no one can do more than guess at the function of the connections you mention.

The P&G web site contains :-

"DLS range Operating Manual (881KB)

I can't give you a URL because it came from a cookie driven search result and the link takes me to another cookie driven generated list of documents which is empty.

I suggest you contact P&G to request this manual and tell them to fix their crappy web site.

Seeing that they are local to me, I rang them. Spoke to Greg, a sales engineer. He said that you should check the continuity of Blue and Brown/Green which should be the same supply voltage pins and the White and White/Green which are 0V. If they are strapped then use one of them if not you can strap them yourself.

The _Uas_ signal on the violet wire is a status output where high = OK and low = bad. I expect that as the NOT label is used that it is an open collector output and you'll need to apply an LED between it and +V to see it work. Off would be OK and alight = bad.

Is it me or is that a really poor example of a 'data' sheet ? Did I get it right as basically your choice of pot, incremental or absolute encoder with 'a spring and a string' ? Is it really 450 quid ?

Yes, yes and yes ;-)

I designed a "spring and a string" (I like your description!) with an incremental encoder for the prototype at a cost of approx £80. I couldn't be sure of the reliability so I'm chickening out and using a commercial solution for the end product.
