Will optical splitter combine too?

Greetings group. I have a Set-Top box and DVD player that only have an optical output. Also, I have a surround sound amp. with only one optical input.

My question is, can an optical splitter (around $5) be used to combine the two outputs so they can both be connected to the amp.

Of course, only the Set-Top box or the DVD would be turned on at any time.

The amp. does have a spare coaxial input which I could use with an optical to coaxial converter (around$40).

Thanks, Russell
