Kodi/OSMC - WTF?

Just started running OSMC on the Pi B+.

It all seems to be more or less up and running. The network seems O.K. because it has installed some updates.

However from Internet tutorials it looks as though I should be able to go Video -> AddOns and scroll through a vast list of channels including iPlayer.

I've checked this on Kodi on my Android tablet and yes, the list shows up. I have quickly managed to get BBC1 running (just as a test).

However on OSMC on the Pi I get nothing in the list of AddOns at all.

I seem to have software running which cannot display any network resources at all.

Anyone hit this and solved it?

Cheers

Did you use one of these SD card images (click "Disk images")

I used the 2016.02-3 and there were plenty of addons pre installed although the main one I wanted, Youtube, did not seem work and that's why I upgraded from the XBMC/Kodi build or whatever they were calling it at the time.

I got the UK TV stuff from a third party repository, iPlayer works really well but ITV C4 C5 don't.

Youtube didn't work for me either so I tried it on my main machine (Linux mint 17.30). It didn't work there either.

I tried running the Youtube startup wizard and it said I needed to log on twice at youtube.com/activate using two separate codes (in the form XXXX-XXXX).

I did this and it worked. I haven't tried on Pi OSMC - I leave that to you.

I can't get ITV player catch-up to work although the live channels work fine.

Yes, thanks for that, it works if I log on. I didn't think to try that, because I'm sure I didn't used to need to unless I wanted to access my own non-public content.

That's my 2yo grandson sorted with a million versions of "Wheels on the Bus" when he visits.

I'll have to give that another go later.

I'm sure logging on wasn't needed only a few months ago.

Glad to be of help - I think ;)

I used an installer from the link above to install on an SD card.

I have now (partially by "poke and hope") sorted it out.

I switched back to the Classic view and noticed an "update" option. The option said roughly "Last updated - never." and once I told it to update, all the channels appeared.

I remember that I couldn't find anything initially on my Android tablet, but found everything a day or so later when I went back to it. I suspect that Kodi often installs with nothing populated but the automatic update options then pull everything in over the next day or so.

So far I haven't found it intuitive, either.

I'm using a wireless keyboard and mouse at the moment.

An attempt to use an Android remote control app didn't go well. I will try again when I am more familiar with the interface.

I find the Pi quite slow in loading a new channel - next step will be to try the Pi 2 and see if the quad core processor makes a big difference.

I find the best remote for kodi is my TV remote control! (needs a TV with CEC ) to use the Pi 2 you will need to re-install as there is a different kernel but I can confirm the operation is considerably smoother that with a B(rev2) :-)

Overclocking makes a noticeable difference to search tiles/channel-change.

My old Samsung TV has CEC (Anynet) but the Pi doesn't seem to recognise it. Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

It's great, apart from running its battery down if I forget to switch it off.

check your HDMI cable other than that I would suspect the TV CEC works without issue on my 4000 series

While my 2009 Samsung not very smart TV had CEC, its now been re-classed as as smart TV feature and not available in the base models. Ironic as if you have a smart TV with media apps, you are less likely to need to connect a Pi based media player - at least for the first 2 years until the TV maker drops all support and the apps stop working!

Any how, with Pi's everywhere, including the kitchen where you don't want remote controls getting all greasy, I've found the best way is the Kodi app for Android (and IOS). That way I can use my phone to control them, and easily switch which one is being commanded. It works very well, you can even use the phone's volume control with it.
