[OT] oxide

My old computer is starting to rust. There are great withe patches on metalic parts. Someone told me its oxide. It seemed like fungus so I heated it with hair dryer. Then it started changing from white to red (like rust). What is the best way to remove that white/red thing from my computer? (don't wanna use sand-paper or similar)

How to prevent computer from further rusting/oxidising ?

Please HELP me, this computer means much to me. If possible, reply to: snipped-for-privacy@drenik.net

TIA

If this is on the steel chassis....

It's possible to buy a chemical that converts rust to something more stable from car repair shops. In the UK the brand name is called Genolite (spelling?). It's a gell you paint on and then leave for a time. You are supposed to wash off any excess of the chemical but if you are carefull and don't use too much you could probably just wipe off any excess and let the rest dry.

Rust needs oxygen and water to form so perhaps your room is a bit damp or humid?

It turned red when I heated it with fan. If you have any idea what it could be, please reply to: snipped-for-privacy@drenik.net

It looks like zinc oxide- the metal of the power supply (?) is galvanized. It oxidizes into a white dusty material. Heating it can cause the metal underneath to rust (that metal would be sheet metal made from cheap steel).

Cheers!

I think I would buy a new case and transfer over the contents. Cases are quite cheap.

Don't get any of that rust on your motherboard or it will die.

Second picture is power supply, third is the box. The box is of different color, so it seems like some other type of metal

I can't replace the box cause its not a PC computer.
