Indeed it accepted the 1536x1152 HD!
This is how it was made: Processing was done in Linux as follows:
For each picture number: convert -resize 1536x1152 img_1450.jpg 1536x1152/1450.jpg
Then: jpg_to_mjpegtools_yuv -f 1450 -l 1481 -s 1 > q1.yuv ffmpeg -i q1.yuv -vcodec mjpeg -sameq -r 1 -y q1.avi mv q1.avi stars_2009_08_18_1536x1152_canon_a470_chdk.avi
This demonstrates the good quality attainable withe the Canon A470 hardware and low light.
Or a good CCD sensor, you can almost see ET :-)
