OT: Nothing to Worry About?

As long as you aren't a corral reef.

Interesting, of course the actual data shows otherwise:

Not much going on! We can stop panicking about warming now, and work on some other terrifying phobias with our therapists. Spiders or gluten or russians maybe.

The coral reefs are probably doing the same things they've been doing for millenia. We're just looking harder at them.

Oh. Well that settles it, then.

Wait...what has been settled, exactly?

Just like Antarctica, the ice isn't just melting, it's being replaced elsewhere on the "continent".

I actually walked to the taco truck in a tee shirt today... no sweater or parka. But I'm a hardy soul.

It's 63F this instant. Scorcher.

That John Larkin doesn't understand science or statistics.

He seems to have a good grasp on the things he has been doing for some thirty years, but can't seem to assimilate any new data or even understand the nature of data in many cases. He often acknowledges his lack of understanding of math which is what is required to properly analyze temperature trends.

Pretty funny that he picks a temperature graph for San Francisco which rather clearly shows the last 4 years to have the highest summer maximum and the highest winter minimum temperatures on the entire graph of almost 40 years. Normally the warming trend is so small it is hard to see amidst the annual fluctuations of 50 degrees. But John was nice enough to pick one which was the extreme and rather clearly shows the warming trend as best such a graph can.

Coral reefs could be the next big energy resource. We could dredge them up and burn them like coal. I'll wager there's billions worth of dollars in coral just waiting to fuel our power stations.

Yeah, calcium carbonate. Why not run cars on it?

That's not what the GRACE satellites are saying.

formatting link

The first survey measured the position of the top of the ice sheet, while t he GRACE satellites measure the mass of the ice sheets.

As Hansen has pointed out, the interesting thing about the East Antarctic i ce sheet isn't how fast it is growing or shrinking, but how fast it is slid ing off into the ocean. Sea level rise tends to happen quickly, when ice sh eets start sliding off fast, and in big chunks. That isn't happening in the Antarctic at the moment - what is happening is that the floating ice sheet s around the continent are breaking up and floating away, removing th dam t hat was slowing down the glacial flows inland.

Bit tricky. Anybody who could burn calcium carbonate would be in line for a Nobel Prize.

Your weatherman may need to get an update it was 1990 (close):

And according to this next site the majority of high temperature records

were still made in the 1930s or earlier.

I bet you don't remember the temperature in the 1930s.

A lot of this is subjective after all.

It seems like just an example of the ergodic theory where if you, say, long-term average the monthly temperature of a single point on the globe with the same latitude and altitude you're likely to get the short-term average of all similar points.

Kinda interesting, AFAIK it has certainly not been conclusively proved that climate is an ergodic system but some data may be "good enough for rock and roll", but as the kids say these days - "not really relevant."

The eighth circle of Hell is said to be reserved for folk who give bad advice. That's because there's nine circles, and there is one worse kind of sin.

"We're just looking harder" means we have increased knowledge and understanding. Most of us, at least. Not John Larkin. Certainly not the 'very, very tiny' guy.

Coral is responsible for turning CO2 into carbonate minerals; it's very important that it be healthy in the next few centuries.
