It is on the US news. Apparently he wasn't rabid enough for the conservative Republicans and was facing a major leadership fight in October. Rather than do that (and expose even more of the fractures in the Republican party) he decided he has had enough and quit.

Unfortunately quitting seems to be the response of a lot of the more rational members in both parties.

If you were given a task to do and the resources to do it, then didn't even try, I'd hope your boss would fire your ass too.

Maybe BBC was reporting on unverified rumors- less consequences if the beeb screws it up compared to US media.
