winding a coil

NEC KM-511SM monitor coil L701 part No. RCHO-2688d8 SYE-9750

i need to rewire a coil that's part of the B+ circuit in a monitor. the problem is the original wire is stranded(18 strands) 0.8mm thick and i can only get the solid core stuff. if i replace it with a similar thickness wire, will it do the job? i don't have an inductance meter so im limited to multimeter and a flyback ring tester. a good coil(from another monitor) measures 1.3ohm and lights 7 led's on the ring tester. my plan is to wind it with the same length/turns as the original wire then measure the resistance and ring it to see how many led's light up.

The frequency of the inductor will be a main factor in the choice of wire used.

As frequency rises, "skin effect" means that electrons prefer the outter part of a conductor so many strands would be preferable rather than a single solid conductor for low frequency and D.C.

Find a source for "Litz" (sp?) wire.

If you can't get the right wire, can you get insulated winding wire which is the same diameter as the individual strands? You might be able to make your own Litz wire, but be careful because the way the strands are twisted might be important so try to copy the original. If the monitor is for your own use, you'll probably be ok, but I would hesitate to perform this kind of repair for a member of the public.
