Sencore LC77 coil check

I recently bought 2 of these and they don't like to ring iron core coils. I always get 2-3 rings and it says a known good coil is bad. I planned to use that function to check for shorted turns in tube based output transformers. Am I missing something? All other functions work great. Also, anyone have an extra manual for one of these? Or maybe a PDF....

I think it's the nature of the beast.

I have the predecessor to it, the LC53 and don't remember it being very useful when it came to test iron core transformers. Things like flybacks and chokes it did ok on though.

Maybe there is some newer technology I'm not aware about but things like power transformers and output transformers are best left to the old fashioned ohm meter like a Simpson 260.

Don't get me wrong, you'll still run into some that come out to be a flip of the coin if they are good or bad but things like output transformers are fairly easy to figure out even if no characteristics or specs are known about it.

Plus from what I remember, even if you got the service info, they usually gave (if at all) the impedence in ohms, not in henrys. Those were always "typical" anyway, meaning +/- 100% in my book.

So what I'm saying is, even if it's some setting on the LC77 you are overlooking, I'm sure the end result is not going to be anything useful that you can take to the bank.

Well foo-ee then ;) Oh well....win some lose some. Worth its weight in gold just for its (out of circuit) cap checking capability.
