Dear Sam and company:This week I set up my new Mac Pro tower, switching the extra drive frommy old G4 tower into the new one. The new one has elegant push in slotsthat require no cabling. It did snap into place.Unfortunately, the old G4 tower used ATA drives and the new one SATA.Of course the drive did not work on the new machine--and when I triedto reinstall it on the old one, it no longer worked.I guess that the differering pin connections fried the HD.Fortunately the HD unit is still in production.Is it worthwhile to buy a new unit and switch the circuit board torecover the data?If so, can I save a few bucks by buying a new one with smallercapacity, but still in the same series?For your info the unit is a Maxtor 6Y120L0.Many thanks in advance,Phil

I've been tickled with Samsung drives. I was prejudiced against them until I perused some of the posts on TIVO repair. They sang the praises of Samsung, so when I needed new drives I bought 2 Hitachi drives and a Samsung - one Hitachi failed in two weeks and was replaced under warrantee, the Samsung and remaining Hitachi have been going strong.

The Samsung is fast, very quiet (unlike the clanking of the Hitachi's read/write arms) and probably runs 10 degrees cooler.

Samsung has a 5 year warrantee

Hi!

I'm sure it is. The drives themselves are of the same shape and size. But what I still have trouble with is how the connector ever made any kind of contact with the pins in the PATA drive. They are very different connectors.

Even if contact was made, I'd have to think that it must have been from the smaller power cable--the data connector shouldn't have caused any damage to the drive, even with signals in the wrong place.

Good luck with your board swap. I hope it works. If it should happen to work, have plans in place to transplant your data quickly. The board may not work as well when the drive reaches full operating temperature.
