Dell Laptop Inspiron 8600 USB

Referenced laptop is in good working order with the exception of the USB connections. This model has two connections incorporated into one assembly - "piggy backed" may be a good description. The problem is that one of the two connections is physically broken and cannot be used. Questions:

1) Is it difficult to replace the assembly? Dell wants ~$600.00 for a replacment motherboard. 2) Does anyone know the part number for this type of USB connection? (hopefully it's a generic part? 3) Soldering temp suggestions.

Thanks much in advance!

The only thing you can do is search out electronics parts catalog. Maybe you will be lucky and find something compatible. Most of these parts are made specific for the manufacture.

Maybe you can make a fly-wire assembly, and then put the other end to a standard type USB socket.

How about using a mini hub connected to the still functioning port?:

Here's a few more hubs that may be even smaller:

If these are not acceptable, perhaps you could take a picture of the connector and post it somewhere? It's likely to be an off-the-shelf part...

Personally I would use a 4 port mini USB hub with the working connector and forget about repairing it. Or buy a PCMCIA USB adapter to get a couple additional ports. Maybe even a docking station with built in ports?
