I've been looking at Keithley application notes for the Franck-Hertz experiment. Some of them show voltage sources that seem to be opposing each other. I don't know much about stuff like that, but I'm under the impression that one doesn't really want to have voltage sources opposing each other (i.e. with opposite polarities) in a circuit. Can someone please address that point?

Post the circuit (ascii art will do). Wikkipedia says that the Franck- Hertz experiment involves a mercury-vapor triode operated with the grid slightly more positive than the plate. There are several ways to arrange this, the simplest being a resistive voltage divider across a single supply.
