One of my relatives claims that returning a cordless phone (not cell phone) to the charging cradle after each use will wear down the charging contacts. Is this true? I can't find anything about this anywhere and can only assume it's wrong.

Your assumption would be pretty safe. Whatever tiny amount of wear occurs (and, technically, there is wear ANY time two surfaces rub together) in such a situation would be negligible to anyone not inspecting the contacts with a microscope.
Keep the peace(es).

The charging contacts are generaly a fairly heavy guage of metal to easily wear down. If your cordless phone is using a silver hydride or similiar type battery that has no memory problems as like the older Nicad batteries, there should be no problem. Most likely, you will wear out the phone before you wear out the contacts!
The average lifespan of chargeable batteries is about 3 to 4 years. Sometimes they last longer.
