Yes. Just make sure you apply the right level to the RTS line on your converter since this is mostly used to switch between transmitting and receiving. And you want to be receiving only.

A few minutes with a 'scope will answer most/all of those questions.
You're using the wrong tools. First step is an oscilloscope.
Your second problem, you're using Hyperterminal.
Oscilloscope. Prefereably a digital storage scope one with two channels that can be set up differentially.
