What kind of battery charger ?

I brought a Ansmann ALCS2-24A' auto voltage detacts charger from ashop " Element 14". I encounter a problem. My 6 volt 10A lead acidbattery at its weakest measure 3.59 volt when I connected to thischarger which indicate it tobe 2 volt value instead of 6 volt. II assumed the issue was problem with the charger and brought a 2nd onewith same brand and model. At testing counter in the shop , the sameproblem occurs the 2 volt indicate instead of 6 volt. I try some othercharger with the same battery with float charge for 3-5 mins than tothe ansmann charger, It now auto detected the voltage was 6 volt andcharging the battery.Is this a design problem with the Ansmann charger ? Thanks for membersadvice .

I keep a big ugly Sears transformer-rectifier supply around for the same reason. Car batteries can take a lot of punishment.

Starter batteries have very thin plates, for more surface area. Deep discharging them warps the plates. Once they short it's all over. "Marine" batteries have a thicker plate so can take a deeper discharge, with the trade-off of area/capacity.
