loud class AB amplifier

LM386 when operated from 6 volts can give sufficiently loud sound.

Would it be possible to design class AB amplifier which can give that kind of loudness but with only 3 volts battery.

Can I just use single stage class AB amplifier or .... what.

Thank you in advance C

You only have half the volts available so, even ignoring for a second device saturation losses, at best you have a 6dB quieter sound.

To regain the required volume you could try 2 AB stages operating in 'bridged mode'. This is where the 2 amplifiers operate in anti-phase and the speaker connects between the 2 outputs.

The short answer is, in a word, "No."

Other stuff out there ... search on Bridge Tied Load

Also commonly referred to as Balanced Transformer-Less

I presume that this would also translate into more clean headroom (using bridged push/pull).
