8-bit DAC, one XOR (exclusive or) gate

output 0 is bit0 xor Bit 1 output 1 is bit1

but potentiometers typically don't do complete revolutions. if you intend using a multi-turn pot you'll need more than 8 bits in your dac to get 256 changes per revolution.

what's wrong with the optical rotary encoder from an old mouse? you might need to gear it up a bit to get 256 per revolution but small gears can be had...

I had success putting "mouse guts" (including the rotary encoders) inside an old atari trackball (it had about 16/revolution resolution with the atari hardware which was too low for my friends amiga... the mose encoders were substituted (basically glued to the ends of the spindles) ane it gave a more useful resolution, and was PC compatible to boot :) )

you could make your own.

draw up a cricle with 180 light and 180 dark sectors (or get a plastic cuircular protractor and colour every second gap between degree marks black with a permanent marker) then all you need to do is fit it to a spindle and put two optical sensors on it... so that they are N+0.5 degrees out of phase it'll not be small but it'll be cheap and reasonably acurate....

AFAIK the dos drivers didn't multiply they only divided by a smaller number unless you mean dynamic resolution whare a fast movement went further than a slow movement...

not much above working out which pin is +5 and which is ground.

rip the chip out (or cut it's legs off) and spin the encoders and see which ex-chip pins get the pulses...

Your joystick port (if it's a decent one) already has 4 A/D converters designed for 270Kohm pots and 4 fire-button inputs.... the A/D converters are probably software ones but they'll work well enough for pong.
