For what it's worth, I replaced the two paper 6"x9" speakers in my '96 camry with $20 6x9 Wal-Mart DuraBrands (polypropylene cone). I was actually considering buying some $40 Kenwood 6x9's from crutchfield.com, but I was in a Wal-Mart, and decided to just return them if they didn't sound nice.
They sound great! They're probably the best $20 I've ever spent on audio in my life. I actually hear bass now!

Usually just overheats and shuts down, but sometimes self destructs.

Actually it should really read 'total impedance *not less* than 4 ohms'.
Don't worry about being exact. Speaker impedance is nominal only and actually varies with frequency.

Does the receiver have connections for two sets of speakers? Is there a speaker selector rotary dial on front (often ntegrated with a power switch) or two pushbuttons that select speaker A or speaker B or both? It's likely set on both, which likely put the speakers in series, making two 8 ohm speakers into a 16 ohm load, vs. putting them in parallel which would make a 4 ohm load.
It might start sounding funny if the output transistors start overheating.
