You mean, like installing applications, maybe? Or actually using Word to produce a document? Silly of me, I guess... I should just admire XP exactly the way it came.

Good, I got your attention. That's better now.
If you don't care, why did you let me get under your skin, and get you to drop down to my level? That was the plan, and you did good.

No wild guesses allowed. I asked for the technical reason. You see, you ranted about people who like to do things there own way, and unless you can come up with a real, justifiable explanation for why choosing a custom option causes problems, you have no credibility. You are just touting something you don't understand.
Do you really believe that M$ would subject themselves to the grief they get, if they could cure the problem by simply taking away some of the choices people make? You need to get a better understanding of where XP came from, and how M$ does coding. Once you grasp that, you will see that it has little to do with where the software is on the drive, or which icon you clicked, and more to do with just heaping lines of code on top of lines of bad code, resulting in more bloat, and potential problems.
Lots of people like XP. Lots of people hate it for lots of reasons. You think its only okay for people like you to rave about it, and those who are pissed at it, and dislike it, are not allowed to voice their opinion?
Unless you have installed it and run it on hundreds of PCs, using hundreds of apps in dozens of ways, all you have is an opinion. That is great, as we are all entitled, but when you speak, you must speak either as that opinion, or as an expert, and there are no experts on XP. The user base is too large for anyone to claim to be able to know how it runs, and how it works across all those user bases, under all circumstances. Therefore, all you have is an opinion, and I have mine.
When you can come and say that putting a program on another drive does "yadda yadda yadda" to the registry, and causes crashes, then call M$ and let them know, as I am sure they would be interested.
Until then, cease to call those who install, use it, crash it, and decide to hate it, any names, and cast no dispersions upon them, for you do not know if they are crashing because of how they install, or because the software sucks. You cannot declare with any credibility that if one installs everything default, and does nothing but run the apps in a 'standard mode' that XP will function perfectly. That is just simply not true, based on comments here, and all over the net, and the office. Some combos are pretty solid, others are not so lucky.
That is about all the facts there are. The rest is just your opinion, to which you are certainly most welcome.
Just because XP is not as bad as that trash known as W9* does not qualify it to be considered anything but barely adequate.
People like you, and jerks like me, deserve a heck of a lot better than XP after all these years. If in twenty or so years, XP is the best we can expect, then it sure does not deserve many pats on the back, for it is trully an embarassment to the PC community to have to deal with it.

Very few 'electro-mechanical' toasters I've encountered do a good job of maintaining 'browness' from one slice to the next... toasters strike me as an age-old device that has very much benefitted from cheap MCUs!
Errr:
Odds are very much *higher* that very, very few people out of serveral hundred millions actually
a) have problems. b) know that they do. c) know enough to gripe about it on usenet. d) but not enough to leave it be ...
From experience with tech support: the people who have problems with XP, are people who cannot leave it well enough alone. Default Install *works* - because that is *the one* that was Tested - try anything else and *you will suffer*.!!
*That's* how people break their installs.PS:
Microsoft could eliminate 80% of the XP/Office failures by removing all forms of interactivity from the installer!!
Ahhh, this is a shame. Poor man is so obsessed with not seeing a bad attitude, or someone who disagrees with him, that he has taken to the airwaves to explain his passions, while trying to get others to come on board with him, and validate his existence here. He thinks whining to my ISP about a mistake I made will get me in trouble or something.
"Attention all of usenet! I am now filtering this address! Pay attention to me, and join up with me! I am important!" Oye....
Sadly, he will never see this post wherein I am confessing, and explaining that the "changed username" which he decries as being abusive, is really a dumb mistake on my part, as I posted once, or maybe twice, from my laptop, rather than my desktop machine, and I admit, I got the "clever" name wrong in the settings.
I don't hide my address to avoid people. Like everyone else, I use a bogus one so the spambots cannot harvest the address.
Its hilarious to consider that someone thinks that I am so intent on stealth, and on bypassing his pathetic filters, that I would change my username, just so he would have to see my posts again......
When I look at the language, and the attitudes of a some of people here, and I consider what goes back and forth, I can't help but be amused to think that this man can deal with all of that, and I was the only one in the group he hates enough to go to war with his filters over. In the end, he has his panties in a bunch over an honest, careless mistake, which I freely admit.
If anyone "sees" him around, let him know I really am sorry that he took my inoffensive error in username so seriously. Who cares about stealth in a newsgroup, and who cares enough to try and work around some sad person's trash filter?? Finally, who comes to usenet and goes out of their way to make a big deal over such a small issue? I guess some folks have no real life, so usenet is all they have....
.
And here we have to wonder what he is thinking, since I am now "cleverly" filtered, how will he see any "attempt to change my.....posts?" If I am intent on harrassing him, all I have to do is get an account somewhere else. Does he think he is the only one who understands the nuances of internet routing and posting?
Gotta love usenet. It really is a microcosm of our society.

heard bad
than 2K.
They are "Customizing It" - the root of all Evil!
The OS'es and Apps (Linux & Windows) allude to being user-customizable by giving free acces to many, many options; However, any combination of applications, OS, patches, and options is a new configuration that one should really Test and Verify.
This is Impossible to do before the sun becomes a lump of coal, so only the Default can be assumed to have been tried by enough people to hit most bugs.
Having being bitten many times by a few characters different in some obscure config file, We now blow a lot of time here on nitting with versioning and change control for *everything* for systems integrated into embedded Linux'en so that they do not fail in the field ( ;-).
Wow. How did it feel to be 50% dead?
John
I recall the comedian on the Blue Collar Comedy Tour joking about a similar situation, when the guy next to him asked how far he thought the remaining engine would take them. His answer was "all the way to the crash site" :-)
Glad you are okay....

Another option at present is refurbished IBM. I just got 2 T23 ThinkPads, one for my daughter and one for myself. I'm very pleased with them.

I think it's a virus. It spreads. It mutates. It crashes. It's the most successful Trojan virus ever. Firewalls can't stop it.

I don't care what you think you know:
Win2000 sucks daily in all work areas, it is ugly to look at and slow, and hardware support clearly on par which NT which sucked at that too -and I have installed NT enough times to know that entirely too well - XP actually works, if you leave it alone, hell, one can even print properly off the web.
That is good coming from Microsoft. It should be appreciated.
Oi, snipped-for-privacy@lamer.com exactly what part of "about as bad as a 1995 Win-NT with the 1999 "Windows Me" GUI glued onto it (which is what it really is)." did you not did you not care to comprehend?

And You are just a lame flamer who are too pussy-whipped from being the last kid collected in kindergarten to even dare have a name to hang your random babble onto. There, I can do names too. happy?
Like I care - as if people who perpetually whinge and whine, all the while still putting up with whatever they whine about are known to pay attention; hell, they are not even listening to themselves fer ricekakes.
Have you ever noticed how MS seem to re-implement all kinds of functionality such as dialogs, menu schemes, shortcuts and so on across the different applications?
They probably do not talk much between departments - obviously not enough to share common features - and maybe they are even competitive enough to have their own special libraries to handle icky things like configuration parsing and file import/export... an organisation will do what it takes to reach the performance figures set by management. Deadlines Rulez.
If one performance figure is loading word really fast, then maybe it is not so important that word may not load in *all* cases - after all, the bonus money is recieved for reaching targets set by Management, not by keeping users happy.

A Wild Guess: The developers hard-coded something in the way paths are handled, the testers never bothered to check because the tests specification did not mention testing configurability, and since most users just slap the applications in wherever they want to go it works for them and not enough bug reports are generated to exceed the noise floor and make it into a service request.
You work for Microshit, don't you.
"Where the user should not really go" F*ck yeh you work for Microshit, head programmer I bet. The only way to learn what can/will happen is by doing it, yes?
It's well and good to clean out and defrag the reg every once in a blue moon, seems to extend XP's usable half life so to speak, but I use my head and pick and choose what stays and what goes, I don't let some third party app do it all on its own, and that's really only a last resort when it starts to run slow before it really needs a format anyway as an attempt to get an extra month out of it.
Utilities are best used when and where required. Like the virus scanner you mentioned. It's my opinion they aren't bulletproof enough to warrant the resources they constantly hog. It's just another false sense of security, use common sense instead. I dont' even keep one installed. But that's not the MicroShit way, their way is to create an O$ full of holes so you can hardly visite a site without being infected and then sell you their new "service" of anti-spyware to not clean it out effectively... all while keeping the oblivious point and click users stupid, which, is how most of them like it.
Helps to update the bios, work the hardware and driver bugs out. Use the most stable drivers not the most recent, do _NOT_ _EVVERRR_ be an "early adopter" of the latest technology or you're sure to get f***ed.
If I wasn't sure before you worked for MicroShit, I am now. The "Tinkerer" or "hacker" if you will, is the one person for whom XP _will_ work good, because its default configuration is pure s*it, meant only for the average email user/web surfer who likes all the pretty colors, animation thingies, beeps, bubbles, smilies, paperclips and dogs, you know, four year olds.
This is often a stage newbies go through who are trying to learn, trying to figure out why their computer is working like s*it, what makes it tick, and how they might possibly fix it. It's not to be frowned upon by anyone other than MicroShit, it should be encouraged. Some will progress beyond this point, some not, but there's no shame in trying.
Those sorts of mundane customizations shouldn't break anything. If they do it's a flaw in the O$ not the user.
Have you even installed XP BTW, or only programmed it. There's very few options one has as to what goes where, you even have to go back in after to remove s*it it installed because it no longer gives you the option prior to intalling them.
Be obvlious? What does Bill pay you you're doing a f****ng excellent job. That's the abused house wife syndrom, brilliant, really. Just ignore it, things will get better.
No, it's pretty much s*it too, but compared to their previous s*it, XP amounts to a smaller pile.
C'mon, we're talking about the richest man in the world, and this is the best he can do? WTF. Even the Xbox was recalled because it was/is a _FIRE HAZARD_.
Ok so ..... let's cut the bullshit shall we?
The #1 step to having XP work reliably is the obvious tried and true method of doing a clean instal, that means format and install fresh, no upgrades or anything, that's always been the way and always will be. That also means if you go to Walmart or wherever and buy a new Dell for 200$ with XP pre installed, yes, step 1, format it. It will come full of s*it you don't want and won't stand a chance at running well.
In order for XP to work half decent, it _must_ be configured. Turn off the bullshit resource hogging themes, don't need em they're ugly anyway, turn off the bullshit kiddie toys, like animating menus, fading effects etc. That takes all of about 4 clicks (I didn't count) and you can nail em all in one shot.
Ahhhhhhh it's woken up now.
Click start/run type in services.msc and go through every service turning off and also disabling all those you don't need and all those which are stupid and dangerous, like messenger for example.
Of course M$ doesn't give you enough information on their services to do so, but you can try searching for more on them on sites like "blackviper.com".... aaaawww hell... it's GONE!! Well, there's others to be found.
Then you'll be booting a leaner, more secure, smoooooth and stable system. I can easily leave my computer running for a week straight doing all kinds of spice sims, gaming, audio/visual junk.... I never _have_ to reboot it, but I do out of 9X habbit, and don't tend to leave it on anyway, being that it's instantly online.
More tips:
Stay off the p*rn and geek haxor sites they're loaded with s*it you don't want.
Don't instal shareware, ever, and you'll likely never have a problem with addware.
It doesn't hurt to check the msconfig start up folder from time to time to make sure it's empty.
Use spybot to immunize your browser.
Use windows washer, keeps things clean and removes those well hidden M$ user tracking files.
Defragment.
Buying new hardware? It's not all created equally. Hit the forumes, look for user reviews, narrow it down to a product that meets your needs and most everyone is happy with, then do more research on it, looking for problems people have had with it and if they've been able to find a fix to it, see if the company supports it or not.... make your decision accordingly...... f*ck dell, buy real quality that doesn't stifle your upgrade options.
I go through that process with every single component I buy for my machine. Yes, it can take awhile, but it saves time in the long run when you have a stable system.
I'd also like to say I'm very glad for those who've shared they're opinions on where Linux falls short, and I fully agree. It's a blast to play with for the sake of playing with, and truly impressive in that respect, but when it comes time for work to be done, it's utterly useless and always has been, unless maybe you're into IT/networking or programming. The applications and usability of it have always been s*it.
It would seem to me they are far too concerned with trying to create a similar desktop to windows in order to attract the point and click idiots who couldn't care either way, when what we really do need is functionality out of it... and programs that can rival those of windows, and things others have already mentioned.
Stability wise XP is excellent compared to the 9X junk, nothing like Linux though. Much like old 9X it can screw up seemingly for no reason to where it can't be booted at all anymore, or more fun, where it just reboots constantly, fine one second, and gone the next.
System restore and the like has always been a joke, it should be turned off and never used. It will hog resources, and back up errors/virus'.. A good disc image would be handy though.
So what though, you'd never run 'nix without configuring it, same with windows (all versions), what I've posted above though has served me very well.
Aside from that if things start acting funny you probably infected yourself with something and the best cure is always a format.
Cheers, Chris
The old (almost) vertical mechanical toasters made better (more moist) toast than the current units. Timing was manual, and it was even easier than on current units to get into contact with the elements.
See the 1948 Toastess model on this page:

No ABS, only ECU and that has a micro controller in there. uC firmware programmers tend to be a bit more thorough. One of the reasons for thoroughness is the rather limited memory space. They can't leave memory leaks or create bloatware.
Oh, and no electric windows, no central lock, no climate control and all that other stuff that makes for an increase in downtime. Just a plain people and equipment mover on a truck chassis.
I wouldn't have bought it. With those things I tend to be a minimalist, in the firm belief that if the old non-electronic scheme has worked mankind probably doesn't need an electronic variety.
Regards, Joerg
Hello Guy,
Usually no OS at all.
Regards, Joerg
I am one of you, but I can't get PADs and Protel, or the PIC programmer to work in OS/2 :-) so I had to bail for now. Its still on here, and I will be using it way before I ever bother with Linux.
