What's the deal with the mesh grid in windshields?

It's predominate near the rear view mirror, but travels the perimeter of the glass! Is this the antenna for the key-fob remote entry? Or is it some sort of capacitance rain-sensor for the automatic wiper control?

Sounds like the UV shield for the Adhesive thats used to hold the glass in place. Usually its black with patterns to feather out the edges.

Thanks! Your answer makes the most sense. I've recently learned that the rain sensor is a small box attached to the rear view mirror (seems part of the mirror at first glance). It houses an infra red emitter-detector that emits light at a 45 deg angle. If the light is reflected back un-obscured, it's not raining. The degree of light blockage is determined as the amount of rain fall!
