UPS recommendations

As someone else correctly pointed out,what i described is an SPS ad runs only when line power drops out. That negates your supposed concerns.

In fact, that is the brand i have that is still going strong after umpteen years of use (have no idea as to total years of use as i got it in a surplus store and it worked right away).

Per computer or just one for the whole office?

Customers... I used to notify a customer when their UPS needs maintenance but if they don't give me the order to do the maintenance then its up to them. Anyway, I quit that business a long time ago.

Get a laptop with a decent DVI output and connect a 22" monitor to it. You can use a laptop just like a desktop machine.

Why, when I have several good desktops, some with DVI output and several large UPS that were free? In fact a couple of the computers are already configured for dual monitors.

If I'm docked, my laptop gets al strung out when the power fails. USB gets royally hosed so it loses the external mouse and keyboard. It has to be shut down, battery removed, and then restarted for everything to work again. As often as it happens now, a UPS is high on the priorities.

What brand?

ThinkPad T60.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X61s with docking station. I've not experienced a power failure, but I'm puzzled... it sounds like the docking station lost it's mind???

Or do you have the mouse directly via the ThinkPad?

Both are plugged into the Advanced Docking station. My T60 worked fine (this is actually a T61). What's really strange is that I have to pull the batteries out of the TP before I can power it back on.

My "office" is simply the "computer room" - the LAN server, gateway, Samba server, email, etc are on one box called "The Server", and my own workstation are here. A minute or two should be enough to save and exit; but the last time, the brownout lasted for less than a second, and The Server shut down. Mine just got a glitch, but we all had to reboot.

I'm collecting recommendations (sorry I took so long to get back to followups, I got interrupted by work. ;-) )

Do you have the same problem if you bypass the docking station, plug the monitor directly to the laptop, then pull the power plug?

At work we have docking stations for our laptops, but mine had a defect - it gives wavy lines on my monitor that gave me a headache. Rather than deal with our IT department for a replacement I bypassed the docking station and plugged everything (monitor cable, mouse, keyboard, power, Cat5) directly into the laptop. (Gateway something- or-other).

I just pulled the plug just now, computer still works.

Cheap, fast solution.

Laptop doesn't have a DVI port, but no. I think it's an=20 interaction between the dock and the laptop that's the problem.

Kinda defeats the purpose of the dock, no?

I have been on USENET for so long that 2 days could be propagation delay.

Eaton, Tripplite, APC, and a couple others are generally decently thought of in the SOHO (500 to 1000 VA) market.

I used to do preventative maintainece on video monitors on one large army base, several air fields, and pilot ready rooms. With proper scheduling, I was still able to stay ahead of schedule, while doing emergency repairs and upgrades to the distribution system I think there was around 225 to 250 monitors and over 50 miles of CATV distribution hardware, along with half a dozen Jerrold AM CARS microwave relays to remote sites. 99% of our hardware was mission critical.
