SOT-23 TL431s are like 4 cents...

Yes-- if the output sticks 'on' the coil fries (maybe- with almost 6x normal dissipation) and the relay drops out.

Damned sticky relay deserves to die. Makes an example for other relays.

2 TL431s, 7 resistors, a zener AND a fet. You could build a bit of very basic testgear with that lot.

All totaling about 5% of the wholesale price of a single relay, I'd reckon.
