The two descriptions aren't mutually exclusive. Good engineers don't go in for solipsism. They know that the gear they are working has a mind of its own.

They also buy a lot of electronics that isn't all that good. Sometimes because they don't know about better products, sometimes because there isn't a better product. Niche marketing is all about finding specialised markets where there isn't much competition for which you can quickly slap together a product which is barely adequate and sell it for a very high price.

If you genuinely have a new product, finding the customers who need it most and will pay though the nose for the pre-production prototype is an excellent way to get enough capital to pay for a proper development program.

You do have to be quick. As soon as an established company in the area gets a sniff of the market they'll whip together something competitive and try to eat your lunch.

I don't have as much money as my younger brother, but he did do a brilliant job organising the year 2000 Olympics in Sydney. If he's popular it's amongst a select few. Again, your judgment doesn't seem to be up to much.

for structural stuff "silver" paperclips are good.

10M chip resistors might work for some tasks.

If you use a connector that has a shell (like USB or DE9) you can often solder the shell to the board (or to paperclips etc)

some connectors have mechanical support pins that do not connect electrically.

sometime I push the end pind back throuh a pin header and solder them to the ground plane

5-minute epoxy glue is non-conductive. Hot glue is less rigid but faster.

This is an interesting idea, though one intuitively would want the resistance to be as high as possible. I did some quick Internet research to see how high I could go in resistance without the resistor getting expensive. I would think for my purposes a through-hole resistor would be more ideal, allowing me to solder on a wire and then still have room to clip a lead on, or what not.

I see that 10 megaohm resistors are quite cheap, of course. On mouser, through hole resistors up to a few hundred megaohm can be workably cheap, like 50 cents each at low quantities. The gigaohm resistors all seem to be quite expensive.

I wonder if one can get, in some form, a simple insulator with leads attached.

In that case the "resistance" would be set by whatever dirt is on the surface. Fingerprint residues contain salt and attract moisture, one might easily end up with an unreliable relative humidity sensor.

The resistance would be dominated by packaging and cleanliness.

3/8" spacing is kind of large so I tend to make my own using fragments of 0.1" PTH FR4 pad-per-hole board and pin-headers instead.

In surface mount there are thermal bridge jumpers - which are insulators shaped like resistors, but not priced like that.

I have some 1T 0805 resistors.

I tries some aggressive sloppy flux and fingerprinting of a small PCB, measured on my Keithley electrometer, and couldn't resolve any leakage.

Instead of 10Mohm it is better to use e.g. 0.1pF SMD capacitors as standoffs.

0.1pF is about twice the capacitance of a single PCB pad for a 1206 SMD footprint on ordinary double-sided FR4. One wonders why such small values even exist.

Pad capacitance goes basically to ground, but that 0.1 pF can go anywhere you like.

I use 0.1-0.3 pF caps routinely in front ends, for controlling frequency response and injecting small signals.

Too small and too fragile. I usually use #26 stranded wire with a knot in it, secured by a loop of solid wire soldered to the ground plane.

Alternatively, a little rectangle of Cu-clad, glued down with cyanoacrylate, makes a durable standoff that will stand a lot of fiddling and soldering. Serrated-blade Wiss aviation shears are great for FR-4 because they don’t get dull—I’ve been using the same set for 30 years.

It's in the value range of parasitics. I've been known to use gimmick capacitors for such purposes, but maybe that could scare away potential customers in your case...

It's OK but it tends to curve the cut a bit so takes some care to make a nice looking rectangle or a narrow strip. It is a great bulk paper cutter.
