I certainly checked out de Tocqueville on wikipedi a - I know the limits of my memory, which is good but not eidetic - but if they'd got the story wrong I'd have found a better reference.

I guess that you miss tubes; the ceramic TIMMS (if i remember the term correctly) were designed for use in space,where even DI ICs start to go sour. The DI ICs were rather good, and used where radiation resistance was a factor (might not work, but would not burn out). The TIMMS worked in those harsh conditions AFAIK.
