The disadvantage of books, and why they are like a brake on science, is that they are frozen, and freeze any scientific understanding at the moment they are printed in millions, and their at that moment having become old ideas, are infecting and poisoning the minds of millions if not billions. That is the cool thing about wikipedia: It is usually up to date. Sometimes within a day of things happening it is already updated.

It is not mere theory. The fact that you don't seem to know this brings into question all of your earlier statements on this subject.

The LT1028 is a very good example of one where the bias current changes when there is EMI on the input out side the gain bandwidth of the device.

You claim to be educating others but it appears that you have a serious hole in your knowledge.

It doesn't seem to be an approach that lets you predict all that much about other people.

Sure. It does all kinds of good things for your physical and mental health, but it's not proved to be much good as way of developing predicitve insights into othe peoples thought processes.

One of the beneficial effects of meditation is the development of certain amout of over-confidence. It's good for your mental health - in the sense of avoiding dpression, but it can lead you make tolerably silly statements, like this one.

Not so far. The combination of brain imaging and disciplined behavioural psychology is a promising area of research, and research centres of various sorts are springing up all over the place, but the stuff being published at the moment isn't up to much.

In the real world, what I've got is sophistication, and what Jan's got is self-delusion. I don't share his particular set of delusions, and to that extent I look "ignorant" to him, in the same way that I look "ignorant" to Jim Thompson, who has his own set of well-loved delusions.

Both of them could benefit by reading a little more widely.

Today's science books do get most of the facts right. You do have to keep reading to more or less keep up with the developments around the edges, but when John Larkin was pushed to name a bunch of scientific fallacies, most of his examples came from around 1800.

More accurately described as a persistent delusion. The human brain has this weakness for believing God or god's, probably for the same reason we like to believe in conspiracy theories - if people or things are conspiring against you, it pays to become aware of it as early as possible, so our minds are constructed to generate a lot of false positives, because this is the price you have to pay to minimise the number of false negatives.

You own claim to expertise fell down at the point where you failed to specify the voltage level of the electromagnetic interference appearing at the input of the LT1028 where you saw this effect.

About the time I replaced the OP-27's in the beam-steering signal chain for the Cambridge Instruments EBMF 10.5 elecron-beam micrfabricator (mask writer) with LT1028's, we up-graded the printed circuit boards from double-side to four layer, with buried ground and power planes; there used to be enough EMI from the digital logic on the adjacent boards that we had to put grounded aluminium screens between the boards, but with the four layer boards this was no longer necessary, so the amplitude of the interference does make a difference.

It's the "except when they aren't" which is the kicker. If your current theory is inadequate, you won't know when you are stepping into "except when they aren't" territory.

The indications that you have lumbered yourself with an inadequate theory can be minor variations between what you see and and what you expected, which are easy to ignore as long as they are minor.

Nice for you. You have also got customers who will pay you to use them, which makes a difference.

The financial aspects of the deal wouldn't make it all that attractive.

Yes it certainly does make a difference what the amplitude of the EMI is. It also matters how small the signal you are attempting to amplify is and what the resistor values in the circuit are.

I'm still figuring on Jim having another BBQ at his place some day (as I recall the problem with the first one was that only Spehro was the only guest!)... and of the ever-dwindling-Usenet-readers remaining, it seems that more of them on the west coast rather than east.
