Grin, I'll just guess too... it's inside a feedback loop after all. Since it's a square root input voltages at powers of 2.

0-1-2-4-8-16(opamp max) with 4 break points. (maybe scaled down a bit) and Vout = 10V at Vin = 10V, seems about right.

WTF is wrong with Sloman?

At least he doesn't have to worry about looking stupid in front of a customer. He doesn't have any.

Works for me! Here's a 5-op-amp version with 0-10V in and 0-10V out. Final gain stage is 4.472 and input voltage is * 2.

Input resistor: 10.0K

Shunt resistors: 7.06K, 13.72K, 3.60K, 5.65K

It could obviously be made a bit better but that's way too much like work.

I scribbled a graph in my notebook, it looks fine. A gain of three from 0-1 V. (inverting) And then I drew three more opamps (turning on at the right point) and sucking current out of the inverting input of the gain of three opamp, to reduce the gain.

Is that a bad idea? George H.

I was actually teasing Rick, who was talking about input bias current errors in that circuit.

The trick of using op amp clamps to switch in resistors at well-defined voltages is cute, especially since (as you say) a 324 is better than good enough, and costs pennies. Diodes come in duals for a couple of cents. Performance-wise, it's better than the Widlar approach, so you can get out the cold cream now. ;)

Of course there's a minor error in the schematic--resistors R1...i should go to the inverting inputs of the op amps, because that's where the clamping action takes place.

Sounds like a lot of parts. You don't need a very good approximation of a square root.

Thanks.

Years and years ago (probably not long after LTC was formed) I asked Bob Dobkin about making a chip that would be sort of a general purpose linearizer. He said they had considered it but thought the market size wouldn't support it. He was probably right, but I thought it interesting.

I used whatever op-amp and comparator spice offered without thinking much - the circuit is just an idea-provoker. It is not yet optimised and I used a 0..1V input span and 1V reference to avoid scaling complications so that harms the dynamic range a bit. Might be good enough for your thermal stabilizer app.

Have fun!

Ahh, well those minor errors can confuse we bears with very little brain.

Muchas Gracias,

George H.

Yowser! OK that's over the top for me. But then piglet was always smarter than pooh bear. (I threw the analog multiplier at it yesterday and failed miserably, mostly (I think) because how it behaves near zero volts.

I'll have to look at it more closely tonight. Right now I've finally seen the light of Spehro's circuit and need to push some numbers around.

Thanks, George (bear of little brain) Herold.

That MCU is starting to look awfully good to me.

Rick

Yeah well as I said it's not an option. I was again using electronics to check my math yesterday. After finding that my model was wrong, I worked it out last night.

WTF the is wrong with Larkin? He makes a mistake, I tell him he's made a mi stake, and he gets obnoxious - as usual.

If I hadn't been mildly rude about pointing out the mistake, he wouldn't ha ve realised that he'd made a mistake.

I think DLUNU is channeling Phil Allison.

I'm not complaining about operational errors, I'm asking how it works. Now that I see someone pointed out that the circuit is drawn wrong I don't feel so stupid.

Rick

I originally read it like Spehro, interestingly--it was only when I looked closely at it that I noticed it was drawn wrongly. So I understood how it was supposed to work, and didn't really understand your difficulty.

The mind is funny sometimes.
