serial programmable pic/mcu

Hi there, Ive been looking at ICSP .. in circuit serial programable chips mcu/pics, but the ones ive looked at so far need to be programmed in the usual way before they can be programmed with the serial port, ie a bootloader.

Are there any chips that can be programmed via rs232 without having to load a bootloader first and still needing the programing connector etc ?

Hello Colin,

The MSP430 also comes with a factory-installed bootloader.

Renesas M16C and similar have an inbuilt RS232 bootloader in protected memory so you can't bugger it up. Hold the prog pin Hi (or is it Lo, can't remember) and power-up to run it. Auto baud rate detect over a reasonable range.

Cheers
