Close. ON semi's LP2950A which has +/-0.5% tolerance and is only about a quarter in moderate quantity (TO-252).

Despite claims of being aimed at automotive though it has no special immunity to transients. Ah, it was 17 years ago. Time flies.

Yes, this direction looks promising. What I am trying to do: a power shift register (NPIC6C596) is going to be connected to a long cable, hence I expect some serious surges. The bidirectional communication and power will go over a single wire (+GND) as a more sophisticated variant of this idea:

The signal (and power) level will be +12V/0V, the magic is in the timing. The pattern will be one-hot, so I can easily create a downlink by drawing some serious current (say 50mA) from the input wire to encode one and keep it small (
