Repl. 6R Spkr w/ 8R

I have two large bookshelf speakers with blown woofers. The label on the speaker enclosure says it is "6 Ohms". Can I replace the 6 Ohm woofers (can't find any) with new 8 Ohm ones of the same size and quality without affecting the sound? There are rwo smaller speakers in each enclosure and a crossover network.

Thank you for any advice.

** The original woofers would have been of nominal 4 ohms impedance ating - the 6 ohm figure is a weighted average impedance of the whole system over the audio band. 8 ohm woofers may indeed be OK to use - but it all depends on their sensitivity ( dB /watt/metre) and how the x-over network is configured.

The gotchas are that the new woofers may simply not loud enough to match up with the other drivers and/or the system impedance falls well below 6 ohms over some band of mid frequencies due to series resonance in an LC network.

You could probably use any similar looking and fitting speaker with only minor changes in the sound.

BTW the woofers are not 6 ohms, the complete unit is.

They would do so much less harm.
